The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Thursday, suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, a move that followed the intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
After earlier peace agreements supervised by the President for Fubara and Barr. Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, the lawmakers had insisted on impeaching the governor, until the latest one.
The House, under the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and the Majority Leader, Major Jack received a motion to halt the impeachment process of the governor at the House resumed sitting.
In January, during the last impeachment procedure, the Majority Leader Major Jack had presented to the House seven allegations against Fubara under Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.
They lawmakers had accused the governor of demolishing the Assembly complex, engaging in extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission and disobeying a Supreme Court ruling on the legislature’s financial autonomy.
The motion to halt impeachment proceedings against Fubara, could mark the end of the political crisis that has gripped the state since early January 2026 following tensions between Fubara and Wike.
A few days ago, the governor, dissolved the State Executive Council and relieved all Special Advisers of their duties, just as he submitted a list of commissioner nominees to the House for screening.
The governor is expected to submit his budget to the Amaewhule-led Assembly at the renovated old Assembly complex along Moscow Road.
