The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Port Command, has intercepted a 40-foot container concealing a massive consignment of Cannabis Indica valued at over ₦4.7 billion, in a major anti-smuggling breakthrough at the Lagos port.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka explained that the seizure followed an intensive physical examination conducted on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
According to him, the examination carried out in NDLEA and the Department of State Services (DSS), in the presence of the declarant revealed that container was laden with 55 jumbo bags of Cannabis Indica alongside a firearm.
He said: “The seized narcotics comprised 2,366 compressed packages with a combined weight of 1,183 kilograms, with an estimated street value of ₦4,732,000,000.
“Also recovered was one Colt’s MK IV / Series 70 .45 automatic pistol with an empty magazine. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the seizure.”
Onyeka added that the illicit items were cleverly concealed inside three used vehicles: One Hyundai Santa , One Toyota Sienna and One Toyota Matrix.
He noted that the successful interception underscores the command’s commitment to the theme of the 2026 World Customs Organisation (WCO) International Customs Day: “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment.”
The Customs Area Controller confirmed that the seized drugs would be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, while the recovered firearm would be transferred to the appropriate security agency.
Reaffirming the Service’s zero tolerance for drug trafficking and transnational crime, Comptroller Onyeka assured the public of sustained vigilance across all ports of entry.
He commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and continuous support, which he said has strengthened inter-agency cooperation and operational effectiveness.
