AFCON: Osimhen scores brace as Eagles destroy Mambas to hit q’finals

Victor Osimhen scored a brace as the Super Eagles produced a brilliant performance to defeat Mozambique’s Mambas 4–0 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations. With this result, Nigeria also became the first team to score four goals in the tournament.

The Super Eagles started the match with confidence and took an early lead through Ademola Lookman. Alex Iwobi began the move from midfield and found Akor Adams, who passed the ball neatly to Lookman. The Atalanta forward stayed calm and curled the ball into the net to put Nigeria ahead.

Nigeria doubled their lead soon after. Once again, Iwobi and Lookman were involved as Adams helped a low cross reach Osimhen, who tapped in from close range.

Osimhen increased the tally two minites after the break. Lookman showed great determination on the left side of the box and crossed the ball into danger, where Osimhen reacted quickly to score his third goal of the tournament.

The Eagles kept pressing, and their pressure paid off again when Moses Simon set up Lookman, who then fed Adams. Adams finished with a powerful shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

With this convincing victory, Nigeria have booked their place in the quarterfinals. The Super Eagles may now face the winners of today’s match between Algeria and DR Congo. As three-time champions, Nigeria will be confident as they move closer to another possible AFCON title.
