Defection: Stop complaining, You had your time, Umahi tells oppositions

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi has defended the gale of defections of opposition governors and other elected party members into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

Umahi, who spoke in Abuja last week said there was not wrong with it since political party association provides for free entry and free exit.

The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor of Ebonyi State said the opposition parties had their time at a particular in the past.

Similarly, the Minister said clearance of the Ambassador Nominees by the Senate was in order.

He dismissed the criticisms from some Nigerians that the nominees were not properly screened.

According to him, the screening of appointees of the President is the prerogative of the Senate and they choose how to do that.

Asked if he didn’t see anything wrong on how the Senate clearing the Ambassadorial nominees as there was non exemption even against the criticisms of some Nigerians, he said, “No, I didn’t see anything wrong.”

On the defection of the governors to APC, he posited that it was the choice based on the performance of the President and APC.

He dismissed any inducement and the insinuations that it might lead to one party state.

He said, the fact that the governor of Abia State, who is his cousin has not detected also shows that no force is on any governor to join APC.

Reacting to the questions on the screening of the Ambassadorial nominees by the Senate and the defections of opposition governors into APC, he said, “The Senate did a good job by clearing the Ambassadorial nominees.

“PDP had their defections years and nobody complained.”
