Lagos Police Refute Reports of Armed Invasion, Say Disturbance Rooted in Land Dispute

The Lagos State Police Command has moved to clear the air following widespread social media reports alleging that armed hoodlums had invaded a riverside community in the state, injuring residents, destroying property and forcing people to flee. In a statement issued on Friday, police spokespeople described the viral claims as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that no such armed invasion occurred and that the situation was mischaracterised by unverified accounts circulating online.

According to the command’s clarification, events in the community near Ajebo, in the Ikosi‑Ejirin Local Council Development Area, stemmed from a land dispute involving rival factions of families. The police explained that tensions between the disputing parties escalated briefly, leading to confusion and commotion in parts of the locality. However, they stressed that the unrest was not the result of an organised attack by armed groups, but rather a localized disagreement that was quickly contained by security personnel. In reassuring residents and the wider public, the police noted that normalcy was promptly restored and that life in the community has continued uninterrupted following the intervention.

The police also rejected reports that lives were lost or residents were seriously harmed during the incident, characterising such narratives as false and mischievous. A spokesperson reiterated that officers were deployed to the scene to prevent any escalation of the land dispute into broader violence and to protect citizens and their property. The command emphasised that officers maintained a visible presence as part of efforts to defuse tensions and ensure safety in the area, calling on members of the public to remain calm and to avoid spreading unverified information that could heighten fear or misunderstanding.

The clarification from the Lagos State Police comes amid growing concern over the rapid spread of unverified claims on social media platforms, where sensational reports can quickly gain traction before official accounts are issued. Authorities underscored the importance of verifying information through official channels and urged community leaders to engage with security agencies when disputes arise, so that peaceable resolutions can be sought without the spread of alarm.

Law enforcement officials also reminded residents that they remain committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state, regardless of the underlying cause of any conflict. In recent months, the police have been active in deploying patrols and engaging with local communities to address insecurity and to reassure citizens of their safety. In this latest clarification, the Lagos Command made it clear that the claims of an armed invasion were inaccurate, and that the reality was far less dramatic — a localized dispute that was addressed by authorities before it could spiral out of control.

As social media continues to play a dominant role in how news and rumours spread, police have renewed calls for Nigerians to exercise caution, prioritise verified information, and work with security agencies to build accurate understanding of events that affect public peace and order.
