PDP Says Internal Failures Made Adeleke a Victim of Circumstance Leading to His Defection

The Peoples Democratic Party has described Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State as “a victim of circumstance” following his recent defection, attributing the move to unresolved internal crises within the party. PDP officials argued that persistent leadership challenges and unresolved disputes created an environment that ultimately pushed the governor to seek stability elsewhere.

According to the party, the internal tensions within the PDP were allowed to escalate over time, with leadership relying on negotiation rather than decisive intervention. The party emphasized that many of the problems were preventable and that a more proactive approach could have preserved unity and prevented key members from feeling compelled to leave.

Officials highlighted that the situation intensified after controversial developments within the party, including disagreements over conventions and the management of influential members. These unresolved disputes, combined with a lack of timely action, created circumstances that the PDP says made Adeleke’s continued membership increasingly untenable.

Governor Adeleke formally resigned from the PDP in early November, citing the party’s national leadership crisis as his reason for leaving. Soon after, he joined the Accord Party, which he intends to use as the platform for his 2026 governorship campaign. While Adeleke expressed continued respect for the PDP, he indicated that ongoing internal strife left him with no viable option but to seek a more stable platform to continue his political journey and governance objectives for Osun State.

The defection has drawn attention to broader issues within the PDP, including the party’s ability to manage dissent and maintain cohesion among senior members. Party officials insist that Adeleke’s departure was driven by circumstances beyond his control rather than disloyalty, while the governor and his supporters argue that the unresolved crises left him little alternative.

This development underscores the importance of strong leadership and proactive conflict resolution in Nigerian political parties, particularly as elections approach. The PDP faces the challenge of restoring confidence among its supporters and addressing structural issues to prevent further defections and maintain its political relevance.
