Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, has died after collapsing unexpectedly in his office on Wednesday afternoon.
The 60-year-old politician was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa, where medical personnel pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival.
According to officials at the Government House, the incident occurred around 1:30 pm, prompting an immediate emergency response. An anonymous source at the scene said Ewhrudjakpo “slumped without any prior warning” and his condition deteriorated rapidly before help could stabilize him.
Preliminary information suggests the deputy governor may have suffered a cardiac-related medical crisis, though hospital authorities have not yet released an official statement on the cause of death.
Colleagues and civil servants remembered Ewhrudjakpo as a hardworking leader with an intense work ethic. “He was a workaholic and never slowed down despite our urging,” one senior government official said.
Born on 5 September 1965, Ewhrudjakpo had served as Bayelsa’s deputy governor since 2020 and was previously a federal lawmaker, having represented Bayelsa West in the Senate.
Following the announcement of his death, security personnel secured the premises of the Federal Medical Centre as senior government officials visited to confirm the development and express condolences. Efforts to contact his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The news has sparked mourning across the state, with many describing his passing as a significant loss to Bayelsa State’s leadership and its people. “He dedicated his life to public service, and his absence will leave a profound void,” one resident wrote on social media.
