Edo residents were urged to remain composed on Wednesday as Governor Monday Okpebholo emphasized that his administration would deploy every legal measure necessary to keep criminal groups from gaining ground in any part of the state. His message followed heightened public anxiety after a disturbing video of a suspected kidnapper circulated widely.
Long before the video emerged, members of the State Security Council had already been engaged in internal assessments of rising security concerns. These earlier evaluations helped shape the rapid response that unfolded, reinforcing surveillance around major routes such as the Benin–Auchi corridor, Ekpoma–Uromi stretch, Benin Bypass, the Ewu–Irrua–Ubiaja line, and other sensitive passages.
A broader sweep began after the Governor instructed security agencies to move beyond routine patrols and deepen their coordinated presence across forests, border zones, and areas historically targeted by criminal gangs. This push involved the Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC, vigilante networks, and the state’s Special Security Squad working jointly in expanded field operations.
Authorities revealed that some breakthroughs have already been recorded. Several individuals linked to earlier incidents were detained as intelligence teams pursued fresh leads uncovered during the intensified patrols. These developments, officials say, reflect the advantages of combining local vigilance with formal security structures.
The viral footage threatening violence near the Benin–Ekpoma–Auchi axis was described by the government as both provocative and unacceptable. In the clip, a man claiming to be a kidnapper boasted of working within communities around Ekpoma. The Governor’s spokesperson, Fred Itua, noted that such statements required an immediate and strategic response, prompting the emergency security gathering.
Following the meeting, information sharing between agencies was strengthened, allowing teams to deploy faster to potential hideouts and choke points. Patrol units have since extended their reach to flashpoints where kidnappers previously operated with relative ease, closing off escape routes and restricting movement within dense forest zones.
Security officials cautioned the public against circulating unconfirmed reports, warning that misinformation could fuel unnecessary panic. They encouraged residents to channel reliable intelligence to the appropriate authorities as the crackdown continues across Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo reiterated that the safety of citizens remains a central priority and affirmed that criminals would find no room to operate under his watch. The administration, he assured, will remain uncompromising in its mission to restore confidence and stability throughout the state.
