Ukraine Allies to Review US Peace Plan at G20 Amid Tensions

Ukraine’s international partners, including the UK, France, and Germany, plan to assess and “strengthen” a US-proposed peace plan for ending the conflict with Russia during the G20 summit in South Africa, according to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The meeting comes amid rising pressure on Kyiv to accept a plan whose leaked details favor Moscow.

The proposed US plan would require Ukraine to reduce its military size and pledge not to join NATO, while Russia would gain de facto control of parts of eastern Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea. In exchange, Kyiv would receive unspecified security guarantees, and Russia could see sanctions lifted and rejoin the G7.

President Zelensky has signaled caution, emphasizing Ukraine’s need to maintain dignity and safeguard its key international partnerships. European leaders have expressed concern over the plan, warning that concessions to Russia could set a dangerous precedent.

US officials maintain that Ukraine was consulted during the plan’s drafting. Russia has indicated willingness to show flexibility but remains prepared to continue fighting.

The G20 talks aim to explore modifications to the proposal to achieve a “just and lasting peace” while addressing Ukraine’s core security concerns.
