President Donald Trump has declared an immediate end to Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals living in Minnesota, framing the decision as part of a tougher immigration stance. He posted the announcement on his Truth Social page, claiming the measure was necessary for security and accusing Somali groups of endangering residents.
TPS has long shielded Somalis from deportation, offering legal protection and permission to work due to ongoing instability in their home country. Minnesota hosts one of the largest Somali communities outside East Africa, a population that grew after decades of conflict and Al-Shabaab insurgency made return unsafe.
Government records show over 700 Somalis currently hold valid TPS, while more than 4,000 others would have qualified had the program been extended. The designation has existed since 1991 and was last renewed in July 2024 because Somalia was still considered unsafe for returnees.
Trump’s new directive forms part of a broader immigration crackdown that has already targeted TPS holders from Afghanistan, Haiti, South Sudan, Venezuela and several others. Legal battles are expected to challenge this latest move.
He also took aim at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, repeating previous political attacks without providing evidence. Meanwhile, the U.S. is preparing to reduce refugee admissions to 7,500 for fiscal year 2026, a steep drop from numbers recorded under President Joe Biden.
