The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on all seven terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Justice James Omotosho, marks one of the most decisive moments in the long-running and highly sensitive trial.
Justice Omotosho declared Kanu guilty of engaging in acts of terrorism, leading a proscribed organisation, threatening and killing security operatives, burning properties, concealment of weapons, and importing an unregistered radio transmitter. According to the court, the prosecution provided sufficient and compelling evidence proving Kanu’s involvement in activities that endangered national security.
Following the conviction, the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), urged the court to impose the maximum sentence—the death penalty. Awomolo argued that over 75 security operatives were killed as a result of the violent activities linked to Kanu and his followers. He added that many innocent Nigerians also lost their lives, while public and private properties were destroyed in the unrest associated with IPOB.
He told the court that giving Kanu the maximum punishment would serve justice for all the victims who suffered or died due to the acts attributed to him.
Justice Omotosho has stood down proceedings until a few minutes before 4 p.m., when he is expected to announce the sentence. Tension remains high as Nigerians, especially those from the South-East, await the final pronouncement in one of the most politically charged cases in recent history.
