Across northern Nigeria, communities are grappling with a surge of violent attacks that have left many in fear. Highlighting this crisis, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has urged the Federal Government to respond promptly and decisively to the worsening insecurity.
Tragedy struck early Monday at Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where armed gunmen on motorcycles launched a brutal raid. During the attack, 25 students were abducted, and the Vice Principal lost her life amid exchanges of gunfire with security personnel.
The security challenges extend beyond Kebbi. The killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State has intensified concerns over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations. Kwankwaso described the incident as a “dark mark” and demanded a thorough investigation into intelligence and operational failures.
In Zamfara State, residents are still reeling from multiple mass kidnappings. Kwankwaso called these events “heartbreaking” and stressed the urgency of rescuing the abducted victims while preventing future incidents.
Kano State has not been spared either. Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas have witnessed repeated bandit raids, leaving communities terrified. While the state government has supported law enforcement with vehicles, Kwankwaso argued that far more robust and strategic interventions are needed.
“These attacks are not isolated incidents,” he said. “Bandits recently crossed from Katsina State, killing three villagers in a single strike. In another case, two nursing mothers were kidnapped in Faruruwa, Shanono. The pattern of violence exposes serious gaps in the nation’s fight against insecurity and calls for immediate action.”
Kwankwaso further stressed that strengthening the armed forces and empowering the Nigeria Police Force are critical steps to protect citizens and restore public confidence in national security.
The incidents at Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command, underline the urgent need for coordinated federal and state security measures to safeguard vulnerable communities and prevent further tragedies.
