Qualifiers for the 2025 Obasa Games have officially started across Lagos State’s six educational districts, signaling the return of the yearly multi-sport competition.
The tournament, organised by Kings Sports International in honour of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, continues to promote sports growth and youth participation across the state.
Originally focused solely on football, the competition now covers a wider range of sports. This year’s edition includes Table Tennis, Scrabble, Chess, Boxing, Athletics, Ayo Olopon, and Football. The opening events were held last Friday at Anwarul Islam College in Agege.
A statement released on Tuesday confirmed that six sports — all except football — were contested on Monday, November 17, in District III, which covers Lagos Island and Epe.
According to Moshood Olawale Ajibola, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, district winners will gather in Agege for the finals. He also revealed that N12 million has been set aside as the prize fund for the 2025 games.
He added that the district qualification rounds, which lead into the main finals later in the month, began on Monday. The schedule continues this week with District IV (Surulere) on Tuesday, District II (Ikorodu) on Wednesday, District VI (Oregun) on Thursday, District V (Badagry) on Friday, and District I (Agege/Alimosho) next Monday.
Ajibola noted that the Obasa Games were created to build the sporting abilities of young people while helping them develop discipline, leadership, goal-setting, and analytical thinking.
The tournament will continue until December 13, 2025, and will feature competitions in two age brackets — U-15 and U-18.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who also heads Agege Local Government, stated during the opening ceremony that the event is designed to give young talents meaningful opportunities in sports.
The opening ceremony took place at Anwar-Islam Model College, Oniwaya, where he reiterated that the festival is focused on discovering and empowering promising athletes across Lagos State.
