Saudi Arabia: 42 Umrah Pilgrims Feared Dead After Bus Crashes Into Tanker Near Madinah

At least 42 Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad, India, are feared dead after a passenger bus carrying devotees from Mecca to Madinah collided with a diesel tanker in the early hours of Monday.

Preliminary reports indicate the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the Mufrihat area, leaving only one survivor from the 43 passengers on board. The survivor has been rushed to a nearby hospital and is receiving medical care.

According to MediaOne, the victims included women and children, with approximately 20 women and 11 children among those travelling. The pilgrims had just completed their Umrah rituals in Mecca and were en route to Madinah when the collision occurred, with many reportedly asleep at the time.

 

Local authorities and emergency teams are actively conducting recovery operations. While the exact number of casualties is still being confirmed, officials are assessing the condition of the lone survivor and any other potential victims.

No official cause of the crash has been announced, but both the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the pilgrims’ travel agency have confirmed the incident. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.

This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the Umrah community, highlighting the dangers pilgrims face even after completing their sacred rituals.
