We take full responsibility, Nwabali apologises after Eagles loss to DR Congo

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has apologised to Nigerians after the team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a dramatic penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the CAF playoff final on Sunday.

Nwabali was one of Nigeria’s best performers on the night in Rabat. He pulled off a top-class save in the final minute of extra time and stopped two penalties during the shootout. But his efforts were not enough, as DR Congo edged the Eagles 4-3 on penalties to end the country’s World Cup hopes.

After the game, the Chippa United shot-stopper posted an emotional message on Instagram, expressing his disappointment and taking responsibility on behalf of the squad.

“Painful! We all did our best for the badge, though our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night. We take full responsibility,” he wrote.

Nigeria had reached the playoffs after finishing second in their qualifying group with 17 points, and hopes were high following their impressive 4-1 win over Gabon in the semifinals. But Sunday’s defeat means the Super Eagles will miss a second consecutive World Cup, having last appeared at Russia 2018.

For DR Congo, the victory is a major step forward. They now progress to the Inter-confederation playoffs in Mexico next March, as they continue their push for a first World Cup appearance since 1974.
