Autopsy Confirms Murder of Ex-Ondo Gubernatorial Candidate as Police Re-Arrest 7 Family Members

The Lagos State Police Command has officially confirmed that former Ondo State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered, following the release of a detailed autopsy report.
Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh, disclosed to Channels Television that the autopsy—conducted on September 11—provided crucial clarity, allowing investigators to push forward. He revealed that new findings from the report prompted the re-arrest and detention of seven out of 14 family members earlier questioned in connection with the case.

The police are now awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to determine who will face charges.

Officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, had previously taken nine relatives and domestic aides into custody for interrogation over the circumstances surrounding Akingboye’s death. Among the key red flags was a suspicious ₦50 million transfer from the deceased’s bank account, allegedly distributed among some close family members.

“With toxicology results now concluded, we are only waiting for the DPP’s advice so prosecution can commence against anyone found liable,” CP Jimoh stated.

Akingboye died under unclear circumstances on September 3. According to relatives, his body was found in the backyard of his residence. His eldest son, Samuel, who lives in Ondo State, alerted authorities and demanded a thorough probe.

CP Jimoh assured the public that the Command remains committed to uncovering the full truth behind the killing and ensuring justice is delivered.
