Osimhen Explains What Drove Him to a Brace After Late Miss Against Gabon

Victor Osimhen says the disappointment of missing a last-minute chance in regulation time only fueled his determination to deliver in extra time, where he struck twice to help Nigeria seal a 4–1 win over Gabon.
Speaking after the match in Rabat, the Galatasaray forward said he refused to dwell on the miss, choosing instead to channel his experience and confidence as a professional.

“As a striker, there are days when I score goals no one expects, and there are moments when I miss chances everyone believes should be easy. It doesn’t change what I’m capable of,” Osimhen told Cali Sport.

He explained that setbacks in front of goal are part of the game and that he has learned to keep his focus whenever such moments occur.
“I’ve played long enough to know these things happen. Even when I miss a big chance, as long as the match is still on, I tell myself there’s time to fix it.”

Osimhen revealed that he immediately apologised to his teammates after the miss and reassured them that he would make amends.

“I told the boys I was sorry, but I also promised I would put things right in extra time. I’m glad I kept that promise. Credit to my teammates too—they gave me the assists for both goals. The mentality in this squad is something I’m very proud of.”

With Gabon now behind them, the Super Eagles are preparing for Sunday’s decisive clash against DR Congo in the final of the CAF 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs. The Leopards booked their place after a dominant win over Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.
