Chelsea Not in Title Race, Says Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend, John Mikel Obi, has played down his former club’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season, saying the Blues are still a work in progress.

Speaking on his podcast, the former midfielder said while Chelsea have shown improvement under their current manager, they are not yet ready to compete for the league crown.

“I think we’re not going to win the league this season,” Mikel admitted.

“We just lack a bit more experience in terms of winning the league.”

Despite ruling Chelsea out of the title race, Mikel remains optimistic about the club’s form and believes a top-four finish is a realistic target.

“Top four should be the aim this season,” he said. “But listen, if we’re there, we’re there.”

The London club head into the November international break sitting third on the Premier League table with 20 points from their first 11 matches. They trail leaders Arsenal by six points and will face the Gunners in a crucial post-break clash that could shape their season.

Chelsea’s performances have been marked by flashes of brilliance from their young squad, but inconsistency has kept them from matching the momentum of league frontrunners like Arsenal and Manchester City.

Mikel, who spent over a decade at Stamford Bridge and won multiple trophies including the Premier League and Champions League, said the current team’s youthful energy is promising—but experience remains the missing ingredient.

“They’re getting better,” he noted. “But you need that balance of youth and experience to go all the way. I think next season or the one after, we’ll see a real title challenge.”
