The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum has said that the forthcoming convention of the Party will redefine Nigerian democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP boss believed that the PDP, as a major opposition party with a national structure, is well positioned to safeguard democracy, defend citizens’ rights, and ensure accountability in governance in the country.
Damagum made the statement on Friday in Bauchi said Nigeria’s democracy is facing “unprecedented challenges” stemming from poor governance, rising insecurity, and worsening economic hardship. He warned that urgent political action is needed to restore public confidence in democratic institutions and uphold the people’s will.
The PDP National Chairman also expressed concern over what he described as the growing threats to Nigeria’s democratic system, saying the opposition party is fully prepared to rescue the nation from misgovernance.
Damagum urged Nigerians to rally behind the PDP and unite in support of its vision to reclaim the country from what he termed years of misrule. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to accountability, economic revival, and citizens’ welfare.
“Democracy thrives only when citizens defend it,” the PDP chairman said, adding that the party will continue to engage Nigerians at all levels to protect and strengthen the country’s democratic system.
