Cholera kills 10 in Adamawa

At least ten people have been confirmed dead this week following the outbreak of cholera in Mubi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The State Commissioner for health, Chief Felix Tangwami, who disclosed this to newsmen in Yola shortly after the Council meeting, lamented that the deceased died at home rather than in health facilities.

Tangwami revealed that all the fatalities occurred at home, with victims failing to seek treatment at medical facilities
urged residents to prioritize personal hygiene to curb further spread.

The commissioner emphasized that the state government, working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), has swiftly mobilized resources to contain the outbreak.

“From the beginning, we have been on top of the situation. Our presence has been there, and this cannot be denied,” Tangwami stated.

He hinted that patients who have access to healthcare received prompt treatment, with 25 individuals admitted as of Tuesday, November 4.

Many others have since been discharged after recovering and receiving education on proper hygiene practices.

To bolster response efforts, the state Epidemiologist, the Director of Disease Control at the Primary Health Care Development Agency, and a team of volunteers have been deployed to Mubi.

Their activities include providing medical services, raising awareness in affected communities, and tracing contacts to ensure infected individuals receive care.

Tangwami also appealed to traditional leaders for support, asking them to encourage residents to seek immediate medical attention at health facilities instead of delaying treatment.

The outbreak underscores ongoing challenges with waterborne diseases in parts of northern Nigeria, where access to clean water and sanitation remains limited. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
