Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has warned that Sunderland could provide a stern test for Arsenal as the Gunners aim to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.
Arsenal moved four points clear at the summit after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. With rivals Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea dropping points last weekend, Mikel Arteta’s side are now viewed as strong contenders for the Premier League title.
Despite Arsenal’s dominant position, Merson has highlighted their upcoming trip to the Stadium of Light as a fixture that could prove tricky.
“When I saw Arsenal’s fixtures recently, I thought they had such an easy run of games.
But Sunderland will cause Arsenal problems. They are an athletic team with pace. They are well drilled and organised, and they counter with pace. They also make the right decisions on the counter, picking the right pass. They didn’t waste the ball when they had it,” Merson said.
Sunderland’s quick transitions, tactical discipline, and counter-attacking style could test Arsenal’s defensive resilience, according to the Sky Sports analyst. Fans and pundits will now be watching closely to see if the Gunners can maintain their winning momentum on a potentially challenging away trip.
