Finance Minister Wale Edun Flies to UK for Medical Treatment

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has travelled to the United Kingdom to seek medical attention, multiple sources close to the development confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The decision to seek medical care abroad was made after Edun’s condition was deemed serious enough to require specialized treatment.

Edun, who is 69 years old, had been recuperating at his Abuja residence under the care of Nigerian doctors before his departure. However, his condition worsened, prompting the decision to seek medical attention in the UK. He left Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight and later departed for London aboard a British Airways flight.

The Presidency had earlier confirmed that Edun was ill but dismissed rumours that he had suffered a stroke or was incapacitated. A senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Edun’s condition was being closely monitored and that doctors might recommend foreign medical care if necessary.

Edun’s absence will be felt at this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., where he was expected to lead Nigeria’s delegation. Instead, the Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, will represent Nigeria at the event.

As a key member of President Bola Tinubu’s economic team, Edun’s health is being closely monitored, and there are no plans to replace him, according to the Presidency.
