Nigeria in Talks with China for $2bn Power Boost to Fix Failing Electricity Grid

At an economic summit held in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, explained that the new project would strengthen power transmission especially in the eastern and western regions—where many of Nigeria’s factories and major industries are located.

Adelabu emphasized that this super grid will not just boost supply but also encourage businesses that abandoned the unreliable national grid to return. For years, Nigeria’s power system has struggled, with just a third of its 13-gigawatt generation capacity reaching homes and industries due to frequent grid failures.

According to him, the project has already been approved by the Federal Executive Council, and talks with China’s Exim Bank are well underway.

To put things in perspective, South Africa, which has just a quarter of Nigeria’s population, boasts about 70 gigawatts of installed power capacity—highlighting just how far Nigeria lags behind.

With power outages being the norm, many companies have turned to generating their own electricity. These private power sources now account for nearly half of all electricity consumed in the country.

Adelabu believes that once completed, the super grid will significantly boost electricity flow to industrial hubs, helping to revive the manufacturing sector and stimulate economic growth.

Since President Bola Tinubu took office in 2023, his administration has rolled out major reforms—from fuel subsidy removal to changes in the tax system—all aimed at stabilizing the economy and attracting foreign investment.

As part of efforts to make the power sector financially sustainable, tariffs were also increased for certain urban areas. This policy shift, according to Adelabu, led to a 70% rise in revenue for power distribution companies in 2024. He projected that revenue could hit ₦2.4 trillion (about $1.6 billion) by the end of 2025.

If the deal with China is sealed and the grid is built, it could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s energy story—bringing more reliable electricity to the people and giving businesses the power to thrive.
