Minister’s Camp Claims Politics Behind UNN Certificate Scandal

The certificate controversy surrounding Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, just took a political turn. His spokesperson, Robert Ngwu, has come forward to accuse the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), of playing dirty politics with the minister’s academic records.

This comes after UNN publicly denied ownership of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) certificate Nnaji submitted to the Senate during his 2023 screening. The university claimed it did not issue the document, sparking allegations of forgery.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Ngwu didn’t hold back. He claimed the university’s management, especially the acting Vice Chancellor, is tampering with Nnaji’s student files. According to him, the Vice Chancellor has political affiliations with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggesting a possible motive behind the university’s stance.

“The file of a student shouldn’t even be in the Vice Chancellor’s office,” Ngwu said. “You have someone acting as Vice Chancellor who is openly a PDP member. Under normal circumstances, he shouldn’t even hold that position. And then there’s another former politician now wearing an academic gown—it’s all politics.”

Ngwu went on to argue that the forgery claims are politically motivated. He believes the Enugu State chapter of the PDP has a history of undermining political opponents and could be targeting Nnaji for daring to challenge the party’s dominance.

“The PDP has ruled Enugu for over 26 years and they’ve mastered how to keep competition out of elections. What they do is discredit any real threat early on,” he claimed. “This is just another attempt to silence someone they can’t control.”

He called on UNN to release Nnaji’s full academic transcript and stop “playing games” with his records.

While the accusations continue to fly, the university has yet to respond directly to Ngwu’s latest claims. The public, meanwhile, watches closely as the line between politics and academia becomes increasingly blurred in this high-stakes saga.
