Irabor Reveals True Nature of Boko Haram Insurgency

Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (retd), has disclosed that the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria was not driven by religious ideology, but rather a campaign of terror and evil.

In his book, “SCARS: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum,” Irabor revealed that the group’s claims of fighting for religious purity were merely a cover for their atrocities against innocent Nigerians, both Muslims and Christians alike.

According to Irabor, Boko Haram’s intention from the onset was to unleash mass killings, abductions, and destruction on the populace, with no regard for faith or religious doctrine. He cited the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction and the Nyanya Bus Station bombing, which were deliberately planned and executed on the same day in April 2014 to attract global attention and distract security agencies. The Chibok abduction, which led to the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls, sparked widespread outrage and the #BringBackOurGirls movement, drawing international condemnation and support for Nigeria’s anti-terror efforts.

Irabor described the Chibok episode as one of the most heartbreaking incidents in Nigeria’s history, exposing the limitations of security agencies and underscoring the need for greater intelligence coordination and rapid response. He also recounted other gruesome attacks by Boko Haram, including the Buni Yadi massacre of February 2014, where 59 students were killed in their sleep. The retired general lamented that Boko Haram’s actions were intended to provoke religious conflict, but the responsiveness of government and religious leaders prevented a full-scale sectarian war.

The book highlights the devastating impact of Boko Haram’s attacks on critical infrastructure, including the United Nations building and Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, which were targeted in a bid to destabilize the country. Irabor’s revelations provide valuable insights into the true nature of the Boko Haram insurgency and the need for continued efforts to combat terrorism and promote peace and stability in Nigeria.

Irabor’s account of the insurgency serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the complexities of terrorism and the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the root causes of violence. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the aftermath of Boko Haram’s atrocities, Irabor’s book offers a timely and thought-provoking analysis of the insurgency and its implications for the country’s future.

The former Defence Chief’s revelations have shed new light on the Boko Haram insurgency, and his book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of the conflict and the need for sustained efforts to promote peace and stability in Nigeria.
