The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their recent directive to cut down the cost of the 2026 Hajj.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by NAHCON’s Deputy Director of Information and Publication, Fatima Sanda Usara, the commission described the move as timely, considerate, and a big relief for Muslims across the country planning to embark on the holy pilgrimage.
“This decision shows the government is listening,” the statement said. “It reflects empathy and awareness of the financial burdens faced by many intending pilgrims.”
Before this directive, NAHCON had announced over ₦8.2 million as the final fare for the 2026 Hajj, a figure that sparked concern and frustration among many who feared they wouldn’t be able to afford the spiritual journey.
The commission also praised the government’s call for early payments from pilgrims and State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards. This move, they explained, would allow the country to take full advantage of the current appreciation of the naira, helping to lock in better rates for services related to the pilgrimage.
Alhaji Ibrahim Hadeja, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, had emphasized after a recent meeting at the Villa that acting quickly would help secure the economic benefits of the stronger currency.
NAHCON said this level of responsiveness shows a government that is both practical and focused on people’s needs. They highlighted how the directive not only addresses the immediate concern of affordability but also improves planning and coordination for a smooth Hajj experience.
“This is another example of how committed the Tinubu administration is to making the Hajj process better for Nigerians,” the commission noted.
They assured that NAHCON will work hand-in-hand with all relevant stakeholders to fully implement the directive and ensure a smooth, well-organized Hajj in 2026.
The commission also encouraged all intending pilgrims to prepare for the new fare announcement and make payments promptly. This, they said, will enable their respective state boards to remit funds early and benefit from the favourable exchange rate during processing.
