Goodluck Jonathan Reveals Boko Haram’s Surprising Pick for Peace

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan made a stunning revelation about Boko Haram insurgents nominating his successor, Muhammadu Buhari, as their preferred representative in peace talks with the government. Speaking at the launch of Gen. Lucky Irabor’s book, “Scars,” in Abuja, Jonathan disclosed that his administration had explored dialogue with the sect through several committees.

One such committee saw Boko Haram nominate Buhari to lead their team in negotiations. Jonathan felt that this nomination would have made it easier for Buhari to negotiate with the insurgents when he took office. However, despite Buhari’s presidency, Boko Haram’s insurgency persisted.

Jonathan’s statement highlights the complexity of the Boko Haram crisis, which has lingered for years. According to him, the issue is “far more complex than often portrayed.” As vice president, Jonathan witnessed the insurgency’s beginnings in 2009, and his administration battled it for five years.

The former president’s comments suggest that he expected Buhari to make significant progress in ending the insurgency. Instead, Boko Haram remains a potent force, and Jonathan believes that Nigeria needs to approach the issue differently.

Jonathan’s revelation has sparked debate about the effectiveness of the government’s approach to tackling Boko Haram. Some have criticized Buhari’s administration for not doing enough to eradicate the insurgency.

The complexity of the Boko Haram crisis demands a multifaceted approach. Jonathan’s suggestion for a new strategy is worth considering, especially given the ongoing struggles to contain the insurgency.
