As Abuja is set to celebrate 50 years of becoming a Federal Capital in February 2026, the Minister, Nyesom Wike has vowed that such a milestone would not be marked with darkness on the streets.
Wike also stated that it wouldn’t be reasonable for Nigeria to be bidding to host the Commonwealth games with the capital city’s streets groping in darkness.
The Minister disclosed this on Thursday when he flagged off the installation of integrated ( hybrid) solar lighting in districts, lot I and II.
Wike noted that the FCT administration has adopted strategies to beat the antics of vandals and saboteurs whose activities have continued to undermine efforts towards lighting up Abuja’s streets.
According to him, the Chinese firms- CCECC, that will handle the project have been instructed to put security features on lighting infrastructure to make it difficult for vandals and those who encourage them.
Wike said, “Abuja will be 50 years old by February next year. And how will it look? A jubilee year, how can you say the city is fine without at least providing the basic lighting.
“Criminals will run away because when there is light everywhere, by the time they come to steal or attack, you know that people will see you. They always thrive when there is darkness. And so then we also find a way to fight back to make sure this project does not work.
“I don’t know how this country will want to host the Commonwealth, yet, their own city cannot have ordinary light at night. Everywhere will be dark. How does that make us a city?
“This time around, by the grace of God, in the next seven months, like I said, with commitment, it will be a different thing”.
Also Speaking, FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud said the project is not just about lighting up Abuja streets; it is about safety, security, sustainability, and service to the residents.
Mahmoud stressed: “This project will also improve security and safety for residents and businesses.
“It will promote clean and renewable energy, thereby reducing the city’s carbon footprint. More importantly, it will support the Administration’s Smart City Agenda, making Abuja a model for sustainable urban living.”
