Gbajabiamila to Rebuild Randle General Hospital into Ultramodern Facility

The Lagos State Government has announced the full reconstruction and upgrade of the historic Randle General Hospital, Surulere, into a four-floor ultramodern healthcare facility.

As read in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, the disclosure was made at a stakeholders’ and community engagement session in Surulere, where government officials, community leaders, and residents were briefed on the project.

According to the statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, who delivered the keynote address, described the project as “a total transformation, not just a renovation.” She explained that the existing structure had become obsolete and could no longer meet the growing health demands of Surulere residents.

Ogunyemi said the new facility would deliver world-class services with accident and emergency units, operating theatres, wards, staff lounges, and VIP recovery spaces, alongside advanced diagnostic facilities such as CT scan and MRI machines. She assured residents that healthcare services would continue seamlessly at the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital during the construction.

The statement further quoted the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, who described the project as a major step forward for Surulere. She emphasized that stakeholder engagement was necessary to prevent misinformation and ensure that the community remained fully carried along.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, was also quoted as saying that the reconstruction represents “an investment in health and in the future.” He appealed for patience and cooperation from residents during the transition, stressing that the temporary relocation of some services was a necessary sacrifice for long-term benefits.

The Surulere Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Yusuf, represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Adewale Dosumu, described Randle General Hospital as a landmark in the community for decades. He said the transformation would renew the hospital’s legacy and deliver on Governor Sanwo-Olu’s promise that no one would be left behind.

Also captured in the statement, the Director of the Medical Project Implementation Unit, Dr. Olusoga Oduwole, presented the detailed layout of the facility, which will include consultation rooms, male and female wards, VIP wards, theatres, physiotherapy units, laboratories, and modern hospital furniture. He explained that the design was tailored to provide a patient-centred experience with international-standard facilities.

The Medical Director of Randle General Hospital, Dr. Olumide Sojinrin, expressed optimism that the reconstruction would mark a new chapter in the hospital’s history. He explained that while some departments, including dental services, radiology, physiotherapy, the chest clinic, and the Heart-to-Heart Clinic would remain functional, others would temporarily relocate to the Maternal and Child Centre, Gbaja.

According to Ogunbanwo’s statement, stakeholders at the event pledged support for the project, describing it as a milestone in Surulere’s healthcare journey and promising cooperation to ensure smooth execution.
