The Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) has approved Abia State Government take over of the moribund Star Paper Mill, Aba
The formal take over, according to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, followed months of negotiations with AMCON to approve its take over and revitalization.
The Commissioner disclosed that other moribund companies that are going to be revitalised include, Afro Beverages, Aba Textile Mills, International Equitable Association, Ken Biscuits, among others.
According to Kanu, “the revitalisation of this moribund company is in line with one of the state government’s economic policies of revitalising moribund companies and selling same to serious and capable investors.
“The overreaching interest of the State government in revitalising moribund companies is to ensure that such companies, when revived, will create job opportunities for Abians as well as internally generated revenue for the State government.
“The State government’s stake in the company, when fully operational, will be minimal, but enough to ensure that the State remains well-positioned to monitor the activities of the company to ensure that the state government and Abians are not shortchanged in any way or manner.”
Prince Kanu also announced the commencement of house to house sanitary inspection in all all the 17 LGAs by the Ministry of Environment in line with the strategic objectives of the Keep Abia State Clean initiative.
He said the inspection services which commenced on August 1, 2025, while defaulters would be prosecuted in line with Abia State Environmental law.
