Atiku Vows to Support ADC Presidential Flagbearer, Regardless of Outcome

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2026 general elections, regardless of whether he clinches the party’s ticket himself.

Atiku, a key figure in the emerging coalition driving the ADC’s resurgence, made this known on Saturday during a reception held in Lagos State to welcome new defectors into the party.

Speaking through his representative, Professor Ola Olateju, the former Vice President emphasized the importance of unity and internal democracy within the party.

“It is not something we can predetermine,” Atiku said. “Whoever emerges through a free and fair contest will receive our full support. All aspirants must be given a level playing field. We are not imposing anyone on the people.”

The event marked a significant boost for the ADC, with the defection of high-profile members from both the African Democratic Congress and the Labour Party.

The new entrants were officially welcomed by ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Kolawole Ogunwale; and the Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru.

Reiterating his commitment to the democratic process, Atiku stated that the eventual flagbearer would not just represent the party but also embody the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians across the country.

Currently, the ADC presidential race is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with three notable political heavyweights—former governors and past presidential contenders—Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar himself—tipped as leading aspirants.
