The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The holiday is part of the seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu following Buhari’s passing in London on Sunday, July 13. Buhari, aged 82, served Nigeria both as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected president.
According to the statement, the holiday is a mark of respect for the late president’s dedication, integrity, and commitment to Nigeria’s progress and unity.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the minister said.
Flags across the nation are to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period. Citizens are encouraged to use the day to promote peace, patriotism, and national unity, ideals Buhari stood for throughout his life.
The government also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
