Allies-Turned-Opponents: Tinubu’s Former Supporters Now Oppose His 2027 Re-election

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, President Bola Tinubu faces strong opposition from former allies including El-Rufai, Aregbesola, Amaechi, and others who once helped him rise to power.

President Bola Tinubu, once surrounded by a strong circle of allies, now faces fierce opposition from former friends and political loyalists as the 2027 presidential election approaches.

In 2023, Tinubu’s campaign was supported by top political figures, including governors, ministers, and influencers. Today, several of those former supporters have turned critics.

El-Rufai’s Exit and Criticism

Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State and once a vocal supporter of Tinubu, defected from the APC to the SDP in March 2025. He accused the party of straying from its values and called Tinubu’s re-election “impossible,” describing his administration as incompetent.

Aregbesola Joins Opposition

Former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, once one of Tinubu’s closest allies, recently joined Atiku Abubakar’s coalition. Their fallout, which intensified during the 2022 Osun election, has now positioned Aregbesola firmly against Tinubu.

Amaechi’s Economic Concerns

Rotimi Amaechi, who once campaigned for APC despite losing the 2023 presidential ticket to Tinubu, is now openly criticizing the President’s economic policies. He urged Nigerians to protest and organize if they hope for change in 2027.

Malami and Lawal Join the Dissent

Former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and former SGF Babachir Lawal have also expressed dissatisfaction. Malami criticized premature endorsements of Tinubu, while Lawal accused the President of enabling insecurity, hardship, and favoritism.

This wave of opposition from within Tinubu’s original support base signals a challenging road ahead as political tensions rise in the buildup to 2027.
