Man Jailed for Stealing 7 Chickens Worth ₦57,000 in Ekiti

A 22-year-old man in Ekiti has been sentenced to 3 months in prison or a ₦30,000 fine for stealing seven chickens from a poultry farm.

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Sunday Gmaed, a 22-year-old man, to three months imprisonment for stealing seven chickens worth ₦57,000.

Gmaed, who had initially pleaded not guilty at his first appearance on July 2, changed his plea to guilty during the follow-up hearing on July 11, begging the court for leniency.

According to Inspector Elijah Adejare, the prosecution officer, the theft occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on June 28. Gmaed reportedly cut through the poultry net at Olaniyi Olasehinde’s farm in Odo Village, Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, and strangled the chickens before attempting to make away with them.

Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika handed down a three-month sentence but offered the option of a ₦30,000 fine.

The case was charged under Section 302(1)(a) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
