Makinde Declares Loyalty to PDP: “Even If Others Leave, I’ll Stay”

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has vowed to remain in the PDP, brushing off talks of a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has openly declared that he will remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regardless of any political coalition moves by other opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during the Southwest PDP caucus meeting held at the party’s zonal secretariat in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized his unwavering loyalty to the PDP and insisted that the party remains united and intact in the region.

Addressing concerns about recent reports of a growing coalition among opposition politicians, Makinde downplayed the significance of such developments. He questioned the intentions and credibility of those forming new alliances, pointing out that many of them had switched political parties several times. According to him, abandoning the PDP for another coalition would be like leaving a house with a leaking roof instead of staying to repair it. He stressed that responsible leaders fix problems from within rather than run elsewhere.

The governor also used the opportunity to condemn the Federal Government’s withholding of local government allocations meant for Osun State. He described the action as unconstitutional and harmful to the people’s well-being. The PDP caucus urged the Federal Government to release the funds immediately, stating that such practices only deepen the country’s political and economic challenges.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, represented by his deputy Kola Adewusi, also reiterated his commitment to the PDP. He distanced himself and his administration from any political coalition, affirming that Osun remains firmly within the PDP family. This message was echoed in the communique read by the party’s Southwest Zonal Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, who applauded both governors for their efforts in keeping the party strong in the region.

The PDP leadership in the Southwest reaffirmed its resolve to work towards victory in upcoming bye-elections in Oyo and Ogun States, as well as local government elections in Lagos State. The communique expressed optimism that the PDP remains the party of choice in the region and across Nigeria. While distancing itself from the coalition, the party also made it clear that it is open to working with like-minded citizens to rescue Nigeria from what it called the “stranglehold” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party further expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity and worsening economic conditions in the country, urging Nigerians not to lose hope. It called on citizens to remain resolute and to rally behind the PDP as the party prepares to lead the nation toward recovery and progress in the coming elections.
