My real relationship with Abacha, Peter Obi clears air

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained what truly happened during his meeting with Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha. He said the meeting was not political and had nothing to do with personal ambition.

Obi gave this explanation in a statement shared by his media aide, Valentine Obienyem. He said the clarification became necessary to stop false stories and help people understand the truth.

According to Obi, he was invited to meet General Abacha along with other importers and traders because of problems at the seaports. At that time, there were serious delays in clearing goods, and the group wanted to find a solution.

“The meeting with General Abacha was not political in nature. I had never met General Sani Abacha prior to that encounter,” Obi said.

“We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking practical solutions to a matter affecting economic activity and livelihoods.”

He said their goal was simple: to help fix the delay at the ports so businesses could move forward and jobs would not be affected.

“The objective of the meeting was to advocate for efficiency and to propose practical steps to restore order and productivity at the nation’s ports,” he added.

“Our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition.”
To support his statement, Obi also shared a copy of the official letter that showed his group was part of a Port Decongestion Taskforce formed under the Abacha regime.

He ended by saying he only wants the public to know the truth — and that the meeting had nothing to do with politics or future plans.
