The streets of Abuja have once again been marred by tragedy following the brutal killing of a Ghanaian woman, Freda Arnong, by a deadly ‘One Chance’ robbery gang. The heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for urgent transport reforms in Nigeria’s capital.
According to her brother Arnold Arnong, Freda had just closed from her church fellowship near the CBN Institute in Maitama on the evening of July 1, 2025. As she made her way home, she unknowingly boarded a commercial taxi operated by a criminal syndicate known for targeting unsuspecting passengers.
Arnold revealed via Facebook that Freda was immediately blindfolded and beaten by the assailants who demanded access to her phone and banking apps. But Freda, who wasn’t tech-savvy and had misplaced her ATM card weeks earlier, was unable to meet their demands. This further enraged the gang.
Desperate and frightened, Freda reportedly offered to call her boss to transfer the N10 million they were demanding. The attackers refused. Instead, they threatened to mutilate her body and sell her organs.
For hours, Freda was driven across the city while being tortured. Around 11:00 pm, she was thrown out of the moving vehicle near the Moshood Abiola Stadium, severely injured and left for dead. Initially ignored by passersby, she was eventually rescued by a local vigilante group and taken to the National Hospital in Abuja.
Medical scans showed devastating internal injuries: broken ribs, lung lacerations, kidney damage, and bleeding. Despite emergency treatment, Freda tragically passed away at 3:00 am on July 7.
Her brother’s emotional plea on social media has since gone viral. He blamed the unsafe public transport system and called for urgent reform:
“We must demand a driver/vehicle authentication system where commuters can verify the identity and registration of commercial vehicles in real-time before boarding. Freda cannot die in vain.”
He also emphasized that Freda’s case was not isolated, and that countless families have silently buried loved ones under similar circumstances.
As the family mourns their beloved daughter and sister, Nigerians are calling on law enforcement and transport authorities to act swiftly — not just to catch the killers, but to ensure no one else suffers Freda’s fate.
