Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention Is a Matter of Justice, Not a Political Tool – Nwachukwu Fires Back at Umahi

Legal advocate Chijioke Nwachukwu has strongly condemned political figures who are suggesting that Nnamdi Kanu’s release should be tied to future electoral support, calling it an insult to justice and to the Igbo people.

Chijioke Nwachukwu, a known justice advocate, has taken a firm stand against the growing political narrative that Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention can be used as leverage in Nigeria’s 2027 elections. In a statement released in Abuja, Nwachukwu declared that the issue is not a matter of political strategy but one rooted deeply in justice, legality, and human rights.

He specifically criticized recent comments made by Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, suggesting that the South-East should offer political backing in return for Kanu’s release. Nwachukwu described such rhetoric as morally wrong, unconstitutional, and disrespectful to the suffering of the Igbo community.

“Kanu’s detention is about justice, not politics,” he said. “Treating his freedom as a bargaining chip only mocks the pain and resilience of our people. This is not a game.”

Referring to several past court rulings, Nwachukwu noted that both Nigerian and foreign courts had already vindicated Kanu. He highlighted the Nigerian Court of Appeal’s decision in October 2022 that acquitted Kanu of all charges, as well as a June 2025 ruling by the Kenyan High Court which confirmed that his abduction and forced return to Nigeria were violations of international law.

He further stated that any attempt to use Kanu’s case for political transactions reflects a dangerous lack of respect for the law and a betrayal of the Igbo community.

“Umahi does not speak for Ndigbo,” Nwachukwu insisted. “He speaks for a handful of political opportunists. If he truly believes he represents the people, let him call a town hall in Enugu, Aba, or Onitsha and watch who comes out willingly.”

He maintained that Kanu still commands broad support from across the region, stemming from decades of marginalization and unaddressed grievances.

Nwachukwu also rebuked the wider political class, accusing some leaders of conveniently switching allegiances based on who holds power. He referred to them as “errand boys” lacking true conviction or leadership values.

He ended by warning that both history and the international community are watching how Nigeria handles this case. “Nnamdi Kanu’s release is not a political favour. It is a legal, moral, and constitutional obligation. Anyone trying to trade it for votes is simply playing with fire.”
