Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has opened up about the tough decision behind adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform for the 2027 general elections.
According to Obi, the move was made after serious reflection and conversations about Nigeria’s current state and the urgent need for transformative leadership.
“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” Obi shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the new coalition officially unveiled the ADC as its chosen platform at an event in Abuja. The group includes top political figures such as:
Atiku Abubakar (former Vice President)
Rotimi Amaechi (former Minister of Transportation)
Nasir El-Rufai (former Governor of Kaduna)
Senator David Mark will serve as the coalition’s National Chairman, while Rauf Aregbesola is taking up the role of National Secretary.
Obi emphasized unity and cooperation among political forces ahead of 2027, saying the coalition is determined to bring forward leadership that is “competent, capable, and compassionate.”
“To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy,” Obi added.
The 63-year-old has publicly declared his intention to serve only one term, aiming to reset Nigeria’s direction and hand over to fresh leadership afterward.
This coalition move is seen as a major shake-up in the political landscape and could reshape the road to 2027.
