Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Spain Car Crash Days After Wedding

BERGAMO, ITALY - APRIL 18, 2024:

Football fans across the globe are mourning the shocking death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a devastating car crash in Spain.

The 28-year-old star and his younger brother, Andre Felipe—a player for Portuguese side Penafiel—were both killed when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire on the A52 motorway near Zamora around 12:30 AM on Wednesday, July 3.

Spanish authorities believe the luxury vehicle may have suffered a tyre blowout while attempting to overtake, which caused it to veer off the road and burst into flames. Despite the swift arrival of the Guardia Civil, Zamora fire brigade, and a mobile ICU, both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy comes just 11 days after Diogo Jota’s wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple, together for 13 years, shared three children—a baby girl (7 months), a son (2 years), and their eldest (4 years old).

Jota’s career was decorated with speed, passion, and goals—53 goals in 153 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolves. His sudden death leaves a gaping hole in the football world. Andre, though less known, had also been carving out a career in professional football.

Flags are expected to fly at half-mast at Anfield, and tributes are already pouring in for both brothers. The crash near Cernadilla, a small rural town, has left the entire region in shock.

The loss of two talented footballers from one family in such a horrific accident has stunned both fans and teammates alike.
