“They Shot Me Twice”: Survivor Recounts Horror of Ogboji Massacre

A survivor of the Ogboji massacre in Anambra State has recounted the terrifying moment gunmen opened fire at a community meeting, killing 13 people and leaving several others injured.

The survivor, Onuoha Godwin, a native of Inyimagu in Ikwo LGA, Ebonyi State, spoke from his hospital bed, where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to his stomach and hand. His recorded testimony has gone viral online, capturing national attention.

“We were almost done with our general meeting of the Ebonyi State Welfare Association in Ogboji,” he said in his local dialect, voice faint but clear. “Suddenly, armed men came in. We thought they were policemen.”

Godwin said the attackers asked for Augustine Odogwu, the association’s chairman, before ordering everyone to lie down.

“They asked me what we were doing. I told them it was a meeting of Ebonyi indigenes. They accused us of being against them and shot me,” he said.

He added that when he couldn’t identify Augustine, they threatened to kill everyone. In fear, he pointed him out.

“They dragged Augustine out and shot him. Then they shot me again,” he said, recounting the traumatic scene.

The gunmen then began firing randomly, killing 11 people instantly, with more dying later from their injuries—raising the death toll to 13.

The Ebonyi State Government, alongside civil society groups, has condemned the attack and is demanding a full investigation and swift justice.

The police have launched a manhunt for the attackers as pressure mounts to bring those responsible to book.
