The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 7 Headquarters, has arrested a man over an alleged fraudulent sale of a defective luxury vehicle, recovering $7,000 from him in the process.
According to a statement by the zone’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Halima Mohammed, the arrest followed a petition filed on June 19 by a woman who was deceived into paying a deposit for a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon advertised on Facebook.
The ad listed the vehicle at ₦32 million (approx. $20,000) and was linked to Ilado Car Stand, located in the Lokogoma area of Abuja.
The complainant inspected the car and was told the only issue was a minor power steering fault, which would be fixed in a week. Based on this, she made an upfront payment of $7,000, with a verbal agreement that she could get a refund if she changed her mind.
However, a follow-up inspection by a professional Mercedes-Benz mechanic revealed serious electrical and mechanical problems, far beyond the earlier claims.
When she requested a refund, the suspect refused, saying it would only be given after the car is sold to another buyer, without providing a clear timeline.
Realizing the transaction was suspicious, the victim filed a petition. A team led by CSP Akinlabi Ogundile launched an investigation. The suspect was invited for questioning, during which he confessed to the fraud. The full $7,000 paid by the victim was recovered.
Police are currently intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspect’s accomplice, who is still at large.
