The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Muanaenye Victor, for allegedly masterminding the kidnapping of his friend and facilitating the collection of a ransom amounting to ₦5.3 million in foreign currency.
According to police sources, the suspect tricked his unsuspecting friend into accompanying him on a visit to a supposed acquaintance in Uli, a community in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state. Unbeknownst to the victim, Victor had already conspired with a criminal gang to abduct him upon arrival.
The victim was promptly seized by the gang and held captive while his family was contacted with a ransom demand. Investigators revealed that the kidnappers received a ransom payment equivalent to ₦5.3 million in US dollars before releasing their captive.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting the police with valuable information.
“Muanaenye Victor lured his friend under false pretences and handed him over to a gang of kidnappers. Investigations have shown that a ransom of ₦5.3 million was paid before the victim regained his freedom,” DSP Ikenga said.
He further added that Victor is cooperating with investigators and has been providing leads that are aiding ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the gang.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring that all those connected to the crime are brought to justice.
The case adds to growing concerns over incidents of betrayal-driven kidnappings, where victims fall prey to people they know and trust.
