A retired superintendent of the Nigerian Police Force has stirred up heated reactions online after revealing that he was paid just ₦2 million as his total pension after spending 35 years in active service.
The ex-officer, who officially retired on October 1, 2023, shared his disappointment in a now-viral video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by user @ChuksEricE.
In the video, the officer said he didn’t receive any money after retirement until two weeks ago, when he was informed that he would be paid ₦3 million. According to him, he was told ₦1 million of the money was for arrears, while ₦2 million was his full pension package.
“I retired from the Nigerian Police on October 1st, 2023. Since then, nothing has been paid to me. Two weeks ago, they called me and said they would pay ₦3 million. I asked, ‘What for?’ They said ₦1 million is my arrears, and ₦2 million is my total pension,” he said in frustration.
“I can’t serve this country for 35 years and be given ₦2 million. The devil is a liar,” he added.
Nigerians React Without Sympathy
Rather than gaining sympathy, the retired officer’s outcry received harsh reactions from many Nigerians online. Some social media users blamed the police for their own poor treatment, pointing to years of brutality, corruption, and oppression of citizens.
Here are some of the responses:
- @AdannaPapaYa: “Add the ones you collected from bribes and leave us alone.”
- @itzmarkferm: “Which useless service did he provide? Is it this useless police force that has destroyed democracy? No mercy for police!”
- @AMoCodeNG: “When the citizens protested for better governance, you people shot at them. Enjoy what you get.”
- @youmustbegood11: “I don’t feel 1% pity for them. The police have caused too many pains and deaths to Nigerians.”
- @Lilly_monie: “Shey na una dey help them rig election?”
