Tragedy struck in Kano State on Saturday after a military-grade bomb exploded at a scrap collection site located along the Eastern bypass.
According to the Kano State Police Command, the explosion killed five people and left 15 others injured, many of whom were rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment.
State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed the incident to reporters. He said the bomb went off shortly after a truck from Yobe State arrived at the scrap facility.
“It was a military EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) personnel that identified the device. It was a military model bomb that exploded,” CP Bakori said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the explosive may have been unknowingly transported alongside metal scraps. Authorities say further inquiries are ongoing to determine how the weapon ended up in the truck.
The Kano State Police have assured the public of a full-scale investigation to uncover the root of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
