Don Jazzy Regrets Not Signing Davido, Simi, and Teni
In a recent interview, Mavin Records founder and top Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy shared some honest thoughts about a few music stars he missed the chance to work with early in their careers.
Don Jazzy said he really liked Simi and regrets not signing her when he had the chance. In his words, “I like Simi. I didn’t sign her. I wish I did.” Today, Simi is known for her sweet voice and strong songwriting, standing tall as one of Nigeria’s top female artists.
Speaking on Davido, Don Jazzy revealed he also had an opportunity to bring him on board, but he decided not to. He explained that he believed Davido would succeed even without his help—and he was right. Davido went on to become one of Africa’s biggest music stars, with global hits and major awards to his name.
Don Jazzy also mentioned Teni as another talent he missed out on. He praised her energy and creativity, saying she’s another artist he wishes he had signed.
Despite missing these opportunities, Don Jazzy expressed no bitterness. Instead, he spoke with respect and admiration, acknowledging the success each artist has built on their own.
This reflection shows that in the music industry, even great producers can miss out, but it also reminds us how talent often finds its way to the top, with or without early backing.
