A wave of anxiety has swept through Ifa Ikot Akpan village in the Etoi clan of Uyo Local Government Area, following a chilling death threat allegedly issued by a notorious cult group.
The community’s traditional ruler, Eteidung Aniedi Ebong, on Thursday, confirmed receipt of a menacing letter purportedly authored by members of the KKK cult confraternity. The handwritten note, which was pasted on the doorpost of the village council hall, threatened to unleash violence on residents and destroy property, accusing local leaders of colluding with security agencies to target cult members.
In the letter, the group warned against further “harassment” of its members and singled out several community leaders, including Youth Chairman Mr. Abasiama Etim Eyo, Mr. Itoro Offiong Essien, Mr. Itoro Etim Ben, Council Chairman Mr. Edidiong Effiong Ubit, and Council Secretary Mr. Victor Edet Asuquo, alleging they had been providing information to law enforcement.
“They vowed not to tolerate any harm to their members,” said the village head, who convened an emergency meeting to alert villagers and strategize a peaceful response.
“We take this threat seriously,” said a village elder who asked not to be named. “This is not an empty bluff. We’re dealing with a real threat to lives and property.”
Reacting to the growing tension, the village council issued a Save Our Souls (SOS) plea through the media to the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Azare, urging swift intervention to avert a looming crisis.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, assured that the police were aware of the situation and that proactive measures were being put in place to forestall any possible violence.
Residents have appealed for increased security presence in the area, expressing hope that government authorities will act quickly to preserve the community’s fragile peace.
