Tenancy Law: Lagos Denies Update

The Lagos State Government has denied reports that the state’s Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect tenants and regulate landlord practices. In a statement signed by the Barr. Barakat Odunuga Bakare, Special Adviser (Housing), LASRERA, the government clarified that the Lagos State Tenancy Law of 2015 is still in effect.

Highlighting the importance of verifying information before publication, Odunuga said; “The Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority.”

He clarified that a bill for a new Tenancy Law, currently under consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly is yet to be passed into law.

She said the Ministry of Housing is engaging stakeholders, including practitioners, the Nigerian Bar Association and traditional leaders, to discuss issues related to real estate transactions, while also assuring that members of the public will be adequately informed when the Bill is passed into law.
