The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Sunday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced his withdrawal from all peace agreements previously brokered to resolve the party’s lingering internal disputes.
In a personally signed statement titled “PDP Crisis: My Position,” Wike accused key party figures of dishonesty and betrayal, declaring that he will continue to fight until “justice is attained.”
The former Rivers State governor pointed fingers at Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, blaming him for the party’s current turmoil. According to Wike, Makinde repeatedly failed to honour agreements reached among top stakeholders—agreements he claimed were crucial to restoring peace in the opposition party.
“At a meeting in Lagos, I told Governor Makinde point-blank that he is the architect of this party’s misfortune,” Wike wrote. “The refusal to adhere to resolutions reached is the root of our crisis, and he is at the center of it.”
Wike emphasized the importance of implementing key resolutions, including the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s legitimate National Secretary, in line with a Supreme Court ruling. He also demanded the withdrawal of all PDP-related legal cases involving Rivers State and an end to moves seeking a state of emergency in the state.
He recounted a series of reconciliation meetings held in Lagos and Abuja, including one attended by Makinde, Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), and former Senate President Bukola Saraki. Wike said despite assurances and resolutions agreed upon at these gatherings, breaches occurred almost immediately—derailing efforts to stabilize the party.
Wike accused Bauchi’s Governor Mohammed of hiding behind the PDP Governors Forum Chairmanship to renege on decisions, while also accusing Makinde of colluding with Enugu Governor Peter Mbah to force Udeh Okoye into the party’s top ranks in violation of the agreement recognizing Anyanwu.
“As recently as May 24, 2025, INEC declined to attend the PDP zonal congress in Jos because the letter of invitation wasn’t signed by the legally recognized secretary. This is what happens when people play politics with legality,” Wike lamented.
The FCT Minister stressed his loyalty to the PDP since 1998, stating he had supported many governors to victory without demanding political favours in return. “I only asked for sincerity and fidelity to agreements,” he said.
Expressing disappointment over the continued violations of trust, Wike made his position clear: “Since it has become obvious that deceit and gamesmanship have replaced integrity in our party leadership, I hereby withdraw from all previous agreements and will continue to fight until justice is served.”
With Wike’s declaration, the PDP may be headed for more turbulence, even as internal divisions threaten its cohesion ahead of future elections.
