Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has called on Northern voters to shun religious and tribal interests but vote for competence and capacity in the next elections.
Obi who was addressing a cross-section of Northern Nigeria leaders under the umbrella of the National Political Consultative Group, noted that the North had voted for religion and tribe in the past, but said “this is the time to vote for something else; a time to consider competence and capacity.”
He told the audience which included former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami that Nigeria’s problems can be solved from the North.
According to Obi, the insecurity in the region was a consequence of poverty, and enjoined them to invest in education because it is the easiest way to tackle poverty.
The Labour Party national leader in a statement by spokesperson of Peter Obi Media, Ibrahim Umar said the North is Nigeria future huge asset of the country.
He recalled that as a banker, Kano was the place they came for cash, but today, all the industries in Kano are gone.
Obi also underscored the importance of trust among Nigerians to be able to tackle the myriads of problems away from ethnic and religious sentiments.
He stated that Northern Nigeria has more potential than successful agrarian nations like Bangladesh and The Netherlands, but noted that what is lacking is good governance, good policies and implementation.
Malami had in a keynote speech, bemoaned the security situation in the region and called for the need to create a platform to rescue the region.
